4 Common Roofing Problems And How To Prevent Them

Posted on: 8 August 2017

The roof of your home is one of the most important outside fixtures to take care of. This is because the roof protects the interior of your home heavily from many damages that the outdoor weather conditions could cause. Plus, the roof protects your home from losing out on energy expenses so long as it is properly sealed. To keep your roof in good condition, you should know of some of the most common problems and how to prevent them:

  1. Damaged Shingles: The shingles on the roof of a home easily become damaged because of heavy winds and rain. This is why it's important to check for damaged shingles after these events take place so that you can replace any damaged or even missing shingles right away. Otherwise, the wood paneling underneath the shingles is going to be exposed and collect water, which is going to both cause potential leaks in the home and rot the wood leading to the roof having to be replaced sooner rather than later.
  2. Leaks: Leaks in the roof are all too common and need to be checked for from the attic regularly. Too often, homeowners wait until they notice a leak from the inside of the home. The problem with this is that it's a slow process before the leak starts to show inside. Often times, the leak is seen clearly from the attic, but not many people go into the attic. When it's raining, it's a good time to check the attic for any signs of a roof leak so that you can get it fixed before it becomes a larger problem.
  3. Damaged Flashings: The flashings are the barrier around roof accessories, such as the vents, chimney, and sunroof. If the flashings become damaged, similar to damaged shingles, they will expose the wood panel underneath. You will notice damaged flashing if it's ripped or torn from the different things that are jutting from the roof.
  4. Poor Roof Install: Finally, the most preventable roofing problem is poor roof installation. It's extremely important that you always hire a licensed roofing contractor to replace your roof and make repairs. Otherwise, the chances of running into expensive problems later will be high. It's important to take note that the roofing system is intricate and all parts need to be installed correctly for the roof to work as a whole.

When you know some of the common problems and how to prevent them, you can be sure that you have a roof that lasts without major damages that can cost you a ton of money to fix. For more information, check out websites like http://osmusroofing.com/.

Hi, my name is Scott, and as you search through this blog, you'll learn invaluable information concerning roofs. When reading the articles, you'll learn about roof repairs, roofing materials and what's new in the roofing industry. I didn't become interested in roofing until my roof started to leak. When that happened, I started doing all types of research to find out why and where my roof was leaking. As I performed my research, I became very interested in the entire industry and even after I hired professional roofers to fix the leak, I still wanted to learn more about roofing. Since I enjoy blogging in my spare time, I decided to start a blog about roofing, and I hope that you also find the information you read interesting and useful.
