Repairing Storm Damage To Your Roof

Posted on: 8 March 2017

Damage to the roof of your home, either from a storm or other means, needs to be dealt with quickly. Water leaking through the roof can damage many things inside the home and cause problems structurally as well. If you home has damage to the roof after a storm, having it inspected and obtaining a repair estimate right away should be a priority. You will need one to file an insurance claim but more importantly, you need to get the roof fixed to keep your family, home, and belongs safe from further problems.

Potential Problems or Damage

When a storm sweeps through the area, the wind can pull loose shingles off the roof and damaged others near the ones that come off. Once the singles are gone, water from wind-driven rain can get under the roofing materials and saturate the wood that if left uncorrected, can cause rot and mold inside the home. If the wood is left to rot, the structural integrity of the roof will eventually become compromised and sagging or the roof or eventual collapse could occur.

Inspection Of The Roof

If you think you have some damage to the roof of your home after a storm, the best option is to get a roofing company to come out and look at it. They will check for loose or missing shingles, damage to the structure, and potential problem areas in the future. In most cases, the company can give you an estimate to repair the storm damage but in some cases, they may recommend replacement of the entire roof. If you feel that you need another estimate and inspection, it is a good idea to have a second company look at it but do not tell them what the first recommended until after you get their inspection report.

Contracting The Repairs

After you have had the roof inspected and are confident in the repairs that need to be done, you can award the work to the roofing company that you feel most comfortable with. You may want to go with the cheapest bid but you don't have to. Sometimes saving money is not the right way to go and if the insurance company is paying the bill, they may have more say in it then you do If you feel strongly about one company over another, be sure to let the insurance adjuster know that. They may let you select one over another even if there is a price difference. Communication is the key and there may be a valid reason to spend a little more on the repairs.
